The Th.D. (Pastoral Theology) degree is specifically designed to train experienced pastors or teachers seeking to advance their understanding of critical biblical doctrines and passages. Over one-half of the program is Biblical exposition. Students may complete the program at their own rate of progress. The program is very accessible to both full-time and bi-vocational pastors, with all courses being available through the ATS Distance Education Formats. The Th.D. (Pastoral Theology) program is the most popular ATS program among seasoned pastors and has a proven record of success.

Course Descriptions

Section One

  • THEO8100 Old Testament Theology—Dr. William Seay (3 Semester Hrs) This course is offered in the ATS MP3 Distance Education Format. The course is an examination of the major theological themes presented by each Old Testament author and presents a theological outline and a time-line application.
  • OTBB8865 Exposition of Daniel—Dr. John Nocera (3 Semester Hrs) This course is offered in the ATS MP3 Distance Education Format. The course is a verse-by-verse exposition of the Book of Daniel with a focus upon the prophetic sections of the book. A special defense is given of the premillennial Second Coming of Christ.
  • NTBB8525 Exposition of Galatians—Dr. Jimmy Hayes (3 Semester Hrs) This course is offered in the ATS MP3 Distance Education Format. The course is a verse-by-verse exposition of Galatians. The theological implications are balanced with practical application. The course instructs the student in the relationship of law and grace.

Section Two

  • THEO7200 New Testament Theology—Dr. William Seay (3 Semester Hrs) This course is offered in the ATS MP3 Distance Education Format. The course is an examination of the major theological themes presented by each New Testament author and presents a theological outline and a time-line application.
  • NTBB8870 Epistles of John—James Hayes (3 Semester Hrs) This course is offered in the ATS MP3 Distance Education Format. The course is a verse-by-verse study of the KJV text of 1John through 3John. Discussion is given upon the date, authorship, audience, and purpose of the letters, along with an emphasis upon theological matters such as eternal security, God-Christian fellowship, and Christian-Christian fellowship.
  • NTBB8101 Exposition of Matthew I—Dr. John Nocera (3 Semester Hrs) This course is offered in the ATS MP3 Distance Education Format. The course examines the first 13 chapters of Matthew in a verse-by-verse style. Special attention is given to the authorship, date, audience, and themes of the gospel. The Roman Catholic teaching concerning Mary is refuted, and the virgin birth is examined closely. Emphasis is given to the Jewish character of the book, with lectures highlighting Christ as King.

Section Three

  • THEO7330 Doctrine of the Holy Spirit—Dr. Gino Cascieri (3 Semester Hrs) This course is offered in the ATS MP3 Distance Education Format. The course is an in-depth examination of the person and work of the Holy Spirit. The course begins with a defense of the person of the Holy Spirit, emphasizing His actions and personality. The course then moves to a defense of His deity. This is followed by a study of the names and emblems of the Holy Spirit. TEXTBOOK REQUIRED.
  • NTBB8102 Exposition of Matthew II—Dr. John Nocera (3 Semester Hrs) This course is offered in the ATS MP3 Distance Education Format. The course examines the remaining chapters of Matthew giving close examination to the parables, prophetic sections including the Olivet Discourse, the crucifixion, and the events leading up to the crucifixion.
  • THEO7340 Doctrine of Christ—Dr. Gino Cascieri (3 Semester Hrs) This course is offered in the ATS MP3 Distance Education Format. The course focuses on both Christ’s humanity and deity, studying the important life-events and character of Jesus.
  • NTBB8538 Exposition of Thessalonians—Dr. Jimmy Hayes (3 Semester Hrs) This course is offered in the ATS MP3 Distance Education Format. The course is a verse-by-verse exposition of Thessalonians which emphasizes the doctrinal implications of the epistle while making practical applications from the book. Special emphasis is given to election, foreknowledge, a defense of pretribulational rapture, and the practical application of administering the church.
