The Th.M. (Pastoral Theology) degree is specifically designed to train experienced pastors or teachers, and is well-suited for those intending to advance into the Th.D. program. Over one-half of the program is Biblical exposition. Students may complete the program at their own rate of progress. The program is very accessible to both full-time and bi-vocational pastors, with all courses being available through the ATS Distance Education Formats. The Th.M. (Pastoral Theology) program is the most popular ATS program among seasoned pastors and has a proven record of success.

Course Descriptions

Section One

  • OT Introduction—Dr. James Gibson (3 Semester Hrs) The course is provided in the MP3 ATS Distance Education Format. The course introduces the student to all 39 Old Testament books. Included in the lectures in a discussion of the authorship, date, audience, and critical passages of each book. The course provides the necessary foundation for all future biblical exposition.
  • OTBB6947 Exposition of Job—Dr. Harley Howard (3 Semester Hrs) The course is provided in the MP3 ATS Distance Education Format. The course is an in-depth exposition of the book of Job that brings Job into today’s pulpit or classroom with practical application and theological insights.
  • OTBB6855 Exposition of Isaiah: Chapters 1-39—Dr. John Nocera (3 Semester Hrs) The course is provided in the MP3 ATS Distance Education Format. This course begins with a critical introduction to the book of Isaiah. Included is a defense against Deutero-Isaiah and the use of the phrase “young woman” in the RSV in Isaiah 7.14. Chapters 1-39, the “Judgment Section” of Isaiah, are covered in the course. Great attention is given to the Jews’ rejection of the Messiah, the resulting punishments, the remnant, and the glories of the millennial kingdom. Study is also focused upon “The Little Apocalypse” of Isaiah 24-27 and the ten blessings of Chapter 30. The course also focuses attention upon the biblical types and their anti-types.

Section Two

  • OTBB6856 Exposition of Isaiah: Chapters 40-66—Dr. John Nocera (3 Semester Hrs) The course is provided in the MP3 ATS Distance Education Format. Covering Chapters 40-66, “The Redemption Section” of Isaiah, the class examines the role of the perfect Redeemer and proves that only Christ could meet the requirements. The prophecies relating to the restoration of Israel are given great focus.
  • To NTBS500 NT Introduction—Mr. Stephen Rost, Th.M (3 Semester Hrs) The course is provided in the MP3 ATS Distance Education Format. It introduces the student to all 27 New Testament books. Included in the lectures is a discussion of the authorship, date, audience, and critical passages of each book.
  • NTBB6429 Exposition of Philippians/Colossians—Dr. Jimmy L. Hayes (3 Semester Hrs) The course is provided in the MP3 ATS Distance Education Format. The course is a verse-by-verse study of both Philippians and Colossians, with special attention given to the contents and doctrinal implications of the books. The course gives students a basic foundation for understanding Pauline theology.
  • NTBB5890 Exposition of Revelation—Dr. John Nocera (3 Semester Hrs) The course is provided in the MP3 ATS Distance Education Format. The course covers all 22 Chapters of Revelation from a dispensational/pretribulational view. Great emphasis is given to the premillennial reign of Christ.

  • NTBB6515 Exposition of Romans—Dr. Jimmy L. Hayes (3 Semester Hrs) The course is provided in the MP3 ATS Distance Education Format. The course is an exposition of Paul’s most well-read epistle. Dr. Hayes brings a dynamic preaching-teaching style that emphasizes both the doctrinal and practical aspects of the book, making Romans fully applicable to all of today’s saints. The student will find this course to be most helpful and informative for defending the Christian faith.
  • NTBB6103 Exposition of John—Dr. Jimmy L. Hayes (3 Semester Hrs) The course is provided in the MP3 ATS Distance Education Format. The course is a verse-by-verse practical teaching of the book of John. In his usual style, Dr. Hayes not only teaches from the Gospel of John, but he also uses extensive cross-references to illustrate how enlightening it can be to put Scripture with Scripture.
  • THEO6400 Pastoral Theology—Dr. William Seay (3 Semester Hrs) The course is provided in the MP3 ATS Distance Education Format. The course examines the many aspects of the ministry, the nature of the church, spiritual leadership, sermon preparation, facing discouragement, and church discipline.
