Writings of John (Th.D. in New Testament)

Program Overview

The Doctor of Theology (Th.D.) in New Testament with an emphasis in the Writings of John is a 72-credit hour advanced research degree designed to cultivate deep scholarly expertise in Johannine literature. This program offers a focused examination of the Gospel of John, the Johannine Epistles, and the Book of Revelation, engaging their theological depth, literary structure, rhetorical techniques, and eschatological vision.

Students will gain advanced proficiency in the translation and exegesis of Johannine texts from the Greek New Testament, while exploring themes such as Christology, pneumatology, dualism, light and truth, and the knowledge of God. The curriculum situates the Johannine corpus within its Second Temple Jewish background, analyzing how these writings reflect and respond to the religious, social, and theological dynamics of the late first century.

Through intensive topical studies, language study, and dissertation research, students will develop the skills to produce original scholarship that contributes meaningfully to the fields of biblical theology, Johannine studies, and New Testament research.
